2022.01.19 23:59 living_a_lie_222 An accounting story. Is there a moral? You decide!
Finally to a spot in my career where I don't feel incompetent all the time. I've been doing various accounting work for 5 1/2 years, and have been in my current job for 1 year.
My current position is "consultant." The role is managerial in nature but I don't have managerial authority nor any direct reports. I do, however, regularly assist 1 less experienced new hire and 2 inexperienced interns. I also distribute work, define expectations, provide training/coaching/guidance, review their work and provide constructive feedback. All this not because it's in my written job description, but because I know it's the right thing to do. My first 3 years of accounting were hell because there was nobody who gave enough of a damn to be a good guide. So I would very much not like to pass along my bad experiences.
My actual work involves heavy collaboration with many teams in different states and different countries. Yes, plural. In addition, I have direct customer contact and provide billing preparation and customer support as well as preparation of credit for returned product.
I have a direct line to the head honcho of operations and am on calls with him almost daily.
I built my experience (like I said, not all of it remembered fondly) in accounting but my current role demands I also put on an FP&A hat, an operations hat, a customer service hat, a systems development hat, and an overall process improvement hat. Hell I even write process docs then distribute and provide training on them. All of this excites me because I feel useful and I _know I am fucking killing it._
Yes, I am new to the company. 1 year is not that long and even 5 1/2 years is not that long. That is to say, I have tons to learn to become an expert in my field. I am always asking questions. Always making contact. Always reaching out. Always trying. Always learning. But when I detect other people need guidance or correction or some other input, I give it as kindly and directly as I can. Some people get a little bit up in arms about the new guy giving guidance!
I get shit done at my job and I work long hours. I feel great about what I bring to the team and my problem solving, solutions, team collaboration, and work output.
My boss, a senior manager, is even newer to the company than me. She has experience in this industry. I think we work well together and complement each other's skills well. I try to keep things on a personal but professional level with her. Sometimes we have impromptu venting sessions about the difficulties or impossibilities of what we're tasked with--she has actually vented way more than me! and then came back and apologized later because she felt she unloaded too much. I said it's all good as long as she's ok with me doing the same occasionally. I'm sharing this to demonstrate that we're on pretty much friendly and professional terms.
So, in what I thought was another such candid conversation (at 7:30 pm while we were both working), I mentioned I'm drowning hard this week, due to fulfilling audit requests on top of an already insane work load, because I decided not to work last weekend (there is not a defined expectation to work weekends). We frequently have talks about needing to bring on more help, as we are severely short handed. She has announced several times that due to being perpetually short handed, it is unreasonable for leadership to continue to expect our team to consistently work insane hours. This is her ploy to hopefully hire some more people. She is usually telling me to sign off and not work too late. To which I chuckle and say "ok" and then keep working (balancing out how damned I would be either way, usually choosing to get my shit done instead of a performance act on how I'm mistreated). So I expected this off-the-cuff conversation to be no different.
Instead, she was like, "well, how come you can't share more of your work with [new hire]? I explained that while not trying to make him sound bad, he is drowning too, his due to inexperience rather than work volume. I didn't throw him under the bus by telling her everything he gives me is total CRAP! and needs revisited 3-4 times before it is acceptable. Nothin' against the guy, he's just inexperienced. And yes, I do use that as an opportunity to try to bring him up to speed. Because we absolutely need hands and brains. It's just slow-going. It's like my manager has already forgotten her first six months at this company were total hell, and she already has accounting and industry-specific experience!
Her tone was that I shouldn't be drowning this week or any week. I remind you, this was at 7:30 pm when we were both still working.
Within the last six months, we have lost 2 key members of leadership to voluntary turnover. The program I'm in is realizing major losses by liquidating obsolete inventory, bringing eyes like magnets demanding ever more explanations, some fancy way (10x over) to slice and dice the data that makes it not look so bad. The company is selling off a profitable segment (along with key persons) and keeping the garbage. So we will be losing even more talent when the sale finalizes. At times I feel like I'm scooping buckets of water out of a sinking ship. Like, is this shit all goin' down no matter what?
I've even been candid with my manager that while I enjoy being employed as a means to modern luxuries like not being homeless, and I'll do what it takes to remain employed, if my job were to dissolve, I wouldn't be upset.
Bonus points if you can guess what company I work for!!! I won't disclose it even if you're right, but rest assured I will smile really big.

2022.01.19 23:59 EddyD2 Proton Drive vs Tresorit
I am trying to decide on a long-term document storage platform. I recently setup a a free Tresorit plan and moved all my files from Google Drive there. I have not tried Proton Drive yet. Is it worth it to make the switch from Tresorit? Is there going to be integration with the macOS desktop? How does the security compare to Tresorit?

Just wondering if FBT is payable if you provide employees with corporate travel insurance?
Because normally the deductibility of travel insurance from an employee perspective is not possible. So I'm wondering if there is any FBT liability.

2022.01.19 23:59 Acceptable-While8668 Recommendations Please
I’ve always had poor posture. Currently I work mostly at a desk and additionally, I am finishing my degree online. I’m curious if using a posture corrector while sitting at my desk at work and at home will help me.
Do you have any recommendations for brands or types of posture correctors? Have you had success using one? Are there exercises I can do in addition to using the posture corrector?
Any advice is greatly appreciated as the options for the corrector and types of exercises can be overwhelming.

2022.01.19 23:59 acrylicflower- Question for you all
Hi everyone, I am a cis woman that has been following the trans community for quite some time. I love seeing you all embracing your true self. I work in an industry where I often connect with many people that I have never met before, mostly via email. My company would like us to use our pronouns in our email signature, which is great, but some people have not added this to their signature. My question is - when speaking to other colleagues about certain individuals without pronouns listed in their signature, I have noticed that I refer to them with “they / their” pronouns, because I’m not sure what their preference is. Is this something that I should be continuing doing?
