2022.01.19 23:04 DCT_Ryder Should I keep studying Civil Engineering?
I'm currently in my second semester of my 2nd year at college studying civil engineering. For the past 2-3 months, I have been questioning whether I should keep studying civil or if I should change majors (Mechanical engineering, more specifically aerospace). If I were to continue, I would do transportation or perhaps water resource. I have read from this subreddit many times and other sites as well that the workload is intense, the pay is not great, work-life balance is tough and people generally aren't happy, and it's scary to hear and it demotivates me to keep pursuing this career. So, what I'm trying to ask is, should I keep going or should I change majors?

2022.01.19 23:04 GhostLadyWriting Relieved - Got some great reviews during my free promo launch for my debut horror novella!
I am just so relieved! I researched, researched, and researched how to launch an ebook and how to promote an ebook like crazy to prepare for my first launch. I was crazy nervous with how people would react to my book, if they would like it, etc. I ended up getting about 2,500 free downloads and some pretty amazing reviews:
5-star: Time twisting convoluted novella that will keep you riveted to your chair while reading. An author who I will definitely follow in the future
4-star: An interesting story. I thought I had it figured out what was happening and while I was close, I wasn't quite correct. The story and characters were entertaining though.
4-star: Very good story..I enjoyed it..but I wish it could have gone a bit further with more detail..other than that it was good
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone on this page for their advice and answers when preparing for the launch. Couldn't have done it without you!

2022.01.19 23:04 brain-crab How I Learned To Accept The Fact That I Don't Exist (Part 2.5) (shorter)
More so a continuation of part 2 than an entirely new part in its own right. Next part will be a good deal longer.
The hall outside Simon’s office smelled recently cleaned, of lemon and chlorine, though, with the muffling of the walls and the once more blinding lights, that was all Zhinn could make out. His hand shot to his head to protect his crying eyes from the light.
Through his fingers, he could make out Simon reaching into a suit pocket and pulling out a sheening black mass that he flicked open with a quick flick of the wrist before offering it to him.
Zhiin begrudgingly pulled a hand free of his eyes to make a show of refusing it, forcing him to shut one of his eyes fully. As he pushed the object away he wondered why Simon was so insistent on providing him with unneeded help.
Simon held the black mass pointed up at its end, as though trying to figure out what Zhinn had seen in it that would warrant refusing it and, finding nothing unusual, offered it again.
Exasperatedly zhiin blocked him once more.
“Simon. Im fine. I already ate. No need to act like some doting mother.”
Simon stared at him perplexedly while trying to figure out a response.
“Their sunglasses, Zhiin, not food.” was what he came up with while stifling a laugh.
When Simon offered the glasses again Zhiin accepted them hastily, but still insincerely mumbled about his unwillingness.
Zhiin, for his part, did not actually know what sunglasses were but could figure out enough from the word to know to put them over his eyes.
Instantly, his squint vanished as the room dimmed drastically, his eyes stopped tearing up moments later as his pupils dilated to allow him comfortable vision.
The lights all flickered at once for a moment, Not once had they done so previously, always burning unerringly, but the detail slipped past them both.
Zhiin looked at the plain hall in surprised silence, not because of the simple eyeglasses but because of how simon just… so plainly offered them for nothing in return.
“I… Thanks Simon. This is much better.”
Simon replied with a nod.
“Anytime. Like I said, hospitality.“
“But what about you? Werent they yours?”
With a flick of his wrist and a flourish of the arm cleverly hiding it until it was fully constructed and ready to be revealed, Simon pulled a new pair of sunglasses from the air, much to zhiins amazement.
“I can make more.” was simons verbal reply as he slotted the new pair into the pocket.
He slapped zhiin across the back, knocking the astonishment out of him
“Now pick up your feet, youve still got some readings to give.” he orderingly suggested as he began to walk down the hall.
With a newfound pep in his step, zhiin eagerly complied and began to walk along.
Taking a left at the cross intersection at the far end of the hall, the pair entered into a wider berthed central passageway with a starkly lit and visibly sterile room at the opposite side, left doorless and entirely open. Other people trafficked the hall, but the origin of most of it came from the chamber, now visibly cavernous after they had come closer.
Zhiin glanced over to simon at the sight of the room.
“Bit of a short trip. I don't really understand why it needed to be hurried.”
Simon quickly corrected Zhiins assumption
“That's just the tube line, the transmemetics department is on the complete other side of the facility and, for practicality, there's no direct line. We have to take the long way around.”
“...In what sense is that practical?”
As they passed the passageway into the boarding area, Simon pointed up and behind them to a large sign, glowing a faint blue, and then to a nearby escalator leading further down.
The sign, clearly intended for tram passengers, read “Conjuration Department” in a brilliant but flickering blue, with the escalator marked by a smaller sign as “To navigation department”
Simon began to explain.
“The navigation department is kept rather close to conjuration for ease of cooperation, what with imagining an object being rather similar to imagining a destination, but still needs to be kept somewhat isolated from the rest of the facility. Too many breaches in security.”
“But if they're that big of security risk why keep them around at all?” Zhiin interrupted
“Because otherwise we’d be stuck here. Traipsing past whatever lurks about the between is an unfortunate part of the job.”
“And the telepaths?”
“Oh yeah. Apparently, they just taste very good to them.”
Simon shuddered, clearly trying to hide something behind a veneer of comedy.
A tram passed in on their left with a hum, stopping and opening with a chime. An artificial voice began spouting information.
“Currently at: conjuration department.”
It paused for a moment as a scant few people pushed past the larger group looking to board. Far too few.
“Next stop: Chronodynamics”
As the trickle of people leaving the tram drew to a close, Simon, Zhinn, and a sizeable amount of others stepped aboard.
The tram was as utilitarian as everything else, though upheld the standards of sterility and cleanliness found in the station. Simple foam and fabric seats lined the sides with metal poles studding the length of the cars for those unlucky enough to be left without a cushion. Large, perhaps oversized, windows made up the sides and offered a great view of the rather unremarkable rock faces and station.
With the hum of its electric engines whirring to life, the car lurched forward and entered into a smooth glide, quickly picking up speed. Zipping past the outer offices of the conjuration department it entered a curve occupied by numerous workshops kitted with emergency exits that led to a less considered or maintained emergency boarding platform.
Zhinn could make out little of what was occurring within the numerous rooms they passed, each busily performing everything from experimentation to delicate production, summoning everything from chemicals to screws.
The outer regions of the chronodynamics wing past the curve were, however, far less occupied. The few that were full were absolutely packed, lined with consoles and communication equipment from end to end. People hurriedly scurried about within, leaping from console to console in a fluid yet uncoordinated dance.
As the tram finished rounding the bend, it began to slow, eventually stopping at another station.
“Currently at: Chronodynamics”
“Next stop: Telekinetics”
The platform was entirely empty. Even the hall beyond it was barren. A man, breathing laboriously, rounded the far corner and went into a mad dash to the tram, just barely blitzing past the automatically closing doors.
He caught himself on one of the metal poles, crouching to catch his breath and attracting no small measure of attention.
Something was off. Simon had dropped the tour guide act back when they began passing the chronodynamics rooms, not even bothering to explain their function. He had stood eerily silent and watchful for nearly two minutes and only dropped the steely gaze when he recognized the person that just rammed their way in.
“Ivan? Shit, I could hardly tell it was you. What's going on?”
Ivan glanced around him at the packed train, now paying less attention to the fading distraction, and half pushed, half ferried, Simon against the door, hurriedly whispering something into his ear.
Simon put a hand on a hidden holster and walked toward Zhiin.

2022.01.19 23:04 mintles Income Disregard Americorps VISTA (NYS)
I've had trouble contacting my local SNAP office-- I was approved for SNAP but even after submitting my living stipend through Americorps in addition to my second job wages, my Americorps stipend was not counted towards my earned income. The number they cite for the max income per household is lower than what I make between the two jobs, which would make me ineligible.
Is the reason my Americorps stipend was disregarded because (1) I was receiving Medicaid prior to applying for SNAP, or (2) they made a mistake on counting my income? I just want to make sure I can actually use my benefits before they tell me to pay it all back. TIA!

Maddening. Is there a way to fix this beyond changing our address to a neighboring zip code?
